NHS Catering and Hospitality professionals are progressing their careers and achieving their ambitions through Bury College apprenticeship training programmes.
Andrew Dunne, Manager at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust in Prestwich, has returned to education to gain a qualification to help him continue his career journey. Having completed a Leadership and Management apprenticeship, Andrew wanted to secure a qualification which would equip him with the skills and competency to lead and manage a team. Andrew has now enrolled onto the Level 4 Hospitality Management apprenticeship.
36-year-old Andrew started working at the NHS in October 2015 as a Food Production Supervisor before starting his role as Acting Assistant Catering Manager in September 2016. This then led Andrew to progress onto his Level 4 qualification which allowed him to gain the knowledge to support him in his new role. Andrew undertakes a range of roles and responsibilities including managing the staff rota, interviewing new staff and looking after the day-to-day running of the catering department and on-site restaurants.
By climbing up the bands in the NHS, Andrew, from Wigan, has identified new opportunities. He said, “The NHS has been really supportive with my apprenticeship and I have had exceptional support from my Bury College assessors who share their advice and industry experiences. I am now looking forward to progressing onto the Level 5 qualification.”
Andrew has benefitted from apprenticeship programmes so much so that he has advised his staff to also undertake various apprenticeships. Colleague Cath McMinn, Restaurant Supervisor, manages the retail side of the hospital restaurant where she looks after buffet bookings, meetings and ordering food.
Cath, who began the Level 3 Leadership and Supervision apprenticeship in August 2017 said, “I would definitely recommend apprenticeships to those who feel would benefit from taking the next steps in their careers. The apprenticeship has helped to develop my confidence.
