In 2014, Stockport General Practice and Alvanley Family Practice consisted of an employee base that was heavily weighted towards older staff, many of whom were working part-time. It desperately needed to diversify, enhance its skills base and bring in a fresh, new perspective…all on a limited budget and without an HR department. To conquer these issues, Alvanley approached Damar Training to recruit and train a medical administration apprentice. They introduced a young man called Neil Williams.
Neil has a disability which makes it quite hard for him to communicate verbally in a patient-facing role but Alvanley soon found that he had lots of other great strengths such as processing prescriptions, IT work and reporting. As a result, he was able to take some admin tasks off other colleagues who were able to concentrate on patient-facing work. Not only this, Alvanley discovered that Neil’s positive, bright and radiant personality was a great boost to team morale!
